My colleagues at Bloomberg TV caught up with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to talk about the iPad. See what he had to say in this short clip below.

Apple propaganda?! I can see iPad well fitted for older people, but for student in school not. Students wants to do more than just read books and watch videos from limited sources. Also, students will need an easy way to transfer files from a device they use for school (provided by school) to other devices. This task is very cumbersome to do with iPad especially when compared to today’s netbooks or notebooks. One has not to forget that despite all that hype about iPad it is only glorified iPod touch! It’s not a computer, but rather a big media player with crippled functionality (no Flash).

Great clip of the great Woz!

Woz is on target– this will be good for students. The iPad is so much more than just a book reader and video watcher– but even in those categories it outclasses the alternatives.

Textbooks will be dramatically different than on netbooks or the Kindle. ou can create art work, do calculations, browse the web, interact with science simulators, even run multi-touch designed word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation apps (iWork).

Not a computer? Ha! Oh, I get it– the definition of a computer is that it can display “Flash”. Hmm… my laptop must not be a computer because I’ve turned OFF Flash! Good riddance to Adobe!

Synching the i-devices is a breeze and the iPad will mount as a disk drive on the desktop for easy transfer.

Love the misinformation coming from people who haven’t used it and want to trash it!

The “iPad is a big iPod” analogy is inaccurate… and lazy.

The iPad is an OS, it’s software, and it’s a giant interface. All this makes for functionality WAY beyond an iPod Touch. Here are just a couple of things you CAN’T do with an iPod Touch:

    http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/korg-ielectribe/id363714043?mt=8

    http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/studiotrack/id362370888?mt=8

As for your specific criticisms you can do far more than “just read books and watch videos from limited sources”. But first, students need books — textbooks — and the iPad is an excellent solution that publishers — and school boards — are/will look into… like Seton Hill University that is GIVING iPads to all undergrads ( http://erictric.com/2010/03/30/seton-hill-university-giving-away-free-ipad-to-all-students/ )

But to your criticisms: filer transfer can easily be done via email and there are third party apps out there (and new ones to come I am sure) that allow for access to files. Also, Apple has their office productivity software for the iPad, called iWork: word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software with the ability to read/write MS Office formats.

The thing to remember about this platform is the huge third party support that the iPod Touch/iPhone has enjoyed, and it’s only going to get better with the iPad. At volume education discounts that Apple would give on bulk orders from school boards, the iPad should develop a big [presence in education.

My apologies for the TRIPLE post… don’t know why that happened.

I’d like to get one to do several things like reading online content, movies, games, music, and drawing.

Schools may not be able to embrace this technology because of the current budget crisis. There simply isn’t money to be an early adopter of a new technology, especially when you realize that teachers losing their jobs right now.

In most school today wireless internet is common. File transfer will simply a matter of a simple email transfer – its so easy.

I suspect Jay is correct…anyone paying attention to the fiscal crisis on all levels of government knows that we are heading into a period of unbelievable government cutbacks. Last I read, states are in the red a combined $180 billion.

I would be surprised if more than a tiny fraction of districts purchase any new computer hardware, much less the iPad.

What if the iPad actually changed the world? I’m all for it trying.

Click the button and the world is your oyster. Unfortunately it’s made in flash so you won’t be able to view it on your iPad.

    Chuck April 9, 2010 2:28 PM

@Bob Barker Regarding file transfers, most email systems have attachment size limits. Yes, you can go to web sites such as Whalemail, but really, I may not want to jump through those hoops to just give a file to a coworker… a simple USB would have been enough.

The iPad is NOT ready yet for real business use…it’s mainly a reading and viewing device.
